SUMMARY

A paraprofessional performs any combination of following instructional tasks to assist teaching staff:

 

Provides one-on-one tutoring for eligible students, if the tutoring is scheduled at a time when a student would not otherwise receive instruction from a teacher

 

Assists with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials

 

Provides assistance in a computer laboratory

 

Conducts parental involvement activities

 

Provides support in a library or media center

 

Acts as a translator

 

Provides instructional services to students.

 

A paraprofessional may not provide any instructional service to a student unless the paraprofessional is working under the direct supervision of a certified educator.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Discusses assigned teaching area with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.

 

Prepares lesson outline and plan in assigned area and submits outline to teacher for review.

 

Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.

 

Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion, and supervised role playing.

 

Prepares, administers, and grades examinations.

 

To supervise student conduct, discipline, and behavior management.

 

Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.

 

Monitors students, individually or in groups who have been separated from their class for inappropriate behavior.

 

Completes a variety of paper work to include incident reports to document inappropriate behavior. 

 

Confers with parents on behavior issues and progress of students.

 

Assists teachers and administrators with S.E.O.P. conferences, discipline issues, and social skill development.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or  completed at least 48 semester hours of study at an institution of higher education; or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate competency through a formal State assessment.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or teachers.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and distance vision.
