SUMMARY

As directed by Maintenance Coordinator II, candidate is responsible for the direction of the District Grounds Crew.  The candidate is responsible for all grounds belonging to the Washington County School District.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

 

Supervises all of Grounds Crew personnel.

 

Is involved in the interviewing and selection of new Grounds Crew Personnel.

 

Researches and prepares long-term staffing plans.

 

Oversees training of new grounds crew personnel.

 

Attends priority meetings in order to prioritize and recommend approval of Grounds related projects to Facilities Director.

 

Coordinates safety meetings on operation of power equipment by grounds employees.

 

Attends meetings, seminars, trainings, etc. related to grounds supervision.

 

Oversees maintenance and regular mowing of lawns, trimming of trees, and grounds maintenance.

 

Designs and implements fertilization and chemical application programs, and attends annual pesticide classes for certified pesticide applicators.

 

Directs aeration and reseeding programs.

 

Monitors water usage, implementing practices for water savings and researching irrigation technology.

 

Monitors and adjusts central irrigation controllers such as, but not limited to, Baseline, Acclima, Rainbird Maxi-com, as well as all other conventional sprinkler control clocks.

 

Coordinates with School Custodians on repairs to valves, clocks, and water mainlines (broken heads being the responsibility of the School Custodians)

 

Maintains certification as irrigation auditor and/or irrigation designer by irrigation association.

 

Acts as a resource for the resolution of any unusual landscape, sprinkler or grounds situation.

 

Works with Landscape Architects to inspect, and recommend for approval, changes in landscape, sprinkler, and playground designs for new buildings to Facilities Director.

 

Manages and inspects new landscapes, sprinklers, playgrounds, and grounds construction or replacement.

 

Designs and contracts for designs for above listed projects and oversee and approve in house or outsourced installations as directed by Facilities Director.

 

Directs School District playground safety inspection program, working with State Risk Management personnel and directing repairs and improvements.

 

Completes Utah State course for playground safety inspectors.

 

Maintains and repairs School District asphalt and concrete areas, this includes prioritizing areas for slurry sealing and replacement and break down same into yearly replacement or slurry seal schedules.

 

Maintains School District fencing.

 

Works with Facilities Director to receive bids and negotiate purchase and yearly supply and maintenance contracts for items and services such as, but not limited to, sprinklers, fertilizers, chemicals, seed, sod, gravel, landscape rock, topsoil, sand, wood chips, tree trimming, and playground equipment.

 

Directs various members of the Grounds Crew in a clear and concise manner.

 

Schedules jobs effectively to insure maximum efficiency of crew and equipment.

 

Uses computers, drafting materials, and all equipment necessary for the direction of the Grounds Crew and the planning of projects.

 

Directs and works with Maintenance Mechanic and Crew Leaders on the regular cleaning, maintenance, and replacement of grounds equipment.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises 10 to 15 employees; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the District’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Must understand and have a working knowledge of applicable horticulture, landscaping, plant diseases, installation and design of irrigation systems (both sensor based and weather station controlled systems), nutrient injection systems, and repair and maintenance of grounds equipment.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Will be required to obtain a CDL license.

Have a certification as an Irrigation Auditor.

Have a license for pest control.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, procedural manuals, safety rules, operating guides, and maintenance instructions.  Ability to design landscape plans and sprinkler systems.  Ability to write reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively.  Ability to relay instructions to crew members.  Ability to communicate clearly with supervisor, school personnel, contractors, sub contractors, architects, inspectors, engineers, and public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to do advance math.  Ability to be able to design workable sprinkler systems and landscape designs using various measures such as gallonage, friction loss, pressure, velocity, length, diameter, gauge, amperage, area, volume, caliper height, and other plant measurements consistent with accepted horticultural trade practices.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of  variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Must be able to anticipate scope of work in order to obtain maximum efficiency of crew and equipment in order to schedule numerous upcoming projects and emergencies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually high.  Workday may entail up to ten hours.
