SUMMARY
Under
the direction of the certified instructional personnel, the ESL Assistant
provides instructional assistance in the field of Language Arts to students in
the district, who are non-speakers of English.
The incumbent also assists in other school programs as assigned and
follows the established program.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
Assists the instructional personnel in teaching
language arts to nonnative English speaking pupils, utilizing courses of study
adopted by the Professional Development Department as well as other appropriate
learning activities.
Instructs pupils in basic communication skills
to facilitate their transition into the regular instructional program.
Provides
individualized and small group instruction in order to adopt the curriculum to
the needs of each pupil to the extent possible.
Operates various types of office equipment such
as computers, copy machines, etc.
Participates
in the development, maintenance and carrying out of systems for classroom
management.
Guides students in working and interacting
harmoniously with other students.
Employee
attendance must be adequate to perform the above-listed essential job

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job

Previous
experience in a public school setting preferred. The ability to operate office machines,
perform routine record keeping functions, and establish and maintain effective
working relationships with co-workers, teachers, students, and the public
preferred.
EDUCATION
and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's
degree (A. A.) or 48 credit hours from a college or technical school; or
passing results on the state approved Para Professional Assessment.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
This
position does not require any certifications or licenses.

Ability to communicate effectively and help
others. Ability to meet and
interact with teachers and students with tact, courtesy, and discretion.
MATHEMATICAL
SKILLS
Ability
to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of
measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate,
ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

ABILITY
Ability
to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in
standardized situations. Ability to maintain discipline among students. Ability to conduct learning
